As ever in turbine design, generator selection is inextricably linked to many other design decisions: the drivetrain speed, the main bearing arrangement, the nacelle structure and top head mass which, in turn, all feed into the ultimate formula: the lowest possible lifetime cost of energy for each turbine. For now, with efficiency and grid compliance the top demands, what are the market trends in generator selection?

Manufacturers have used a variety of generator designs in their variable speed turbines. The Dual-Fed Induction Generator (DFIG), an industry standard since the late 1990s, currently rules the roost in volume terms but its need for a high-speed gearbox, extra maintenance and difficulty in complying with grid codes means turbine manufacturers have been looking for new directions. Today, it’s permanent magnet generator (PMG) technology that looks most promising.

AC vs DC power flow

The difference between AC and DC power flow is denoted by the difference between its letters: A=alternating, and D=direct. C= current. First of all, the current C stands for the electric current in a wire, and this current consists of electrons that are being pushed through the wire by an electric field, also known as a voltage. “Power flow” means that the current carries power or energy to something (e.g., a computer, TV, motor, radio) to which the wire is attached. “Alternating” means that the current, or electrons, are being pushed back and forth by the voltage, while “direct” means that the electrons are being push only in one direction all the time by the voltage.

Energy-generating window unveiled

PARIS: Scientists in China said Thursday they had designed a “smart” window that can both save and generate energy, and may ultimately reduce heating and cooling costs for buildings.

While allowing us to feel close to the outside world, windows cause heat to escape from buildings in winter and let the Sun’s unwanted rays enter in summer. This has sparked a quest for “smart” windows that can adapt to weather conditions outside.

Today’s smart windows are limited to regulating light and heat from the sun, allowing a lot of potential energy to escape, study co-author Yanfeng Gao of the Chinese Academy of Sciences told AFP. “The main innovation of this work is that it developed a concept smart window device for simultaneous generation and saving of energy.” Engineers have long battled to incorporate energy-generating solar cells into window panes without affecting their transparency.
